FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY
History
The Faculty of Philosophy of The University of Tuebingen evolved from
the late medieval Artists Faculty. In the so-called "great Faculty of
Philosophy" of the nineteenth century most of the Natural Sciences and
Humanities were represented. After the Faculty of Natural Sciences was founded,
only the Humanities remained in the Faculty of Philosophy. Today`s Faculty of
Philosophy contains the Department of Philosophy, and specializes in
philosophical studies.
Teaching Staff and Students
The Faculty's teaching staff
consists of seven
professors and additional teaching personnel. More than 1.200 students are
studying in the faculty.
Courses of Study
The Faculty of Philosophy offers three courses of study. Each course of
study leads to a specific examination. The three examinations are:
-
Masters Examination
-
First Teachers Examination
-
Doctoral Examination
Courses leading to the Masters Examination or to the First Teachers Examination
proceed through two stages. The first stage lasts four semesters and ends with
an intermediate examination. The second stage normally lasts four semesters and
ends with either the Masters examination or the First Teachers Examination.
Admission to the Doctoral Examination normally requires a Masters Degree or the
successful completion of the First Teachers Examination in Philosophy.
Philosophy cannot be studied as the only major subject. Another major subject
or two minor subjects are required.
Students preparing for the Masters Examination in Philosophy may chose other
major or minor subjects from the list of subjects in which Masters Examinations
must be taken. Almost all subjects in the Humanities are permitted. Students
prepariny for the First Teachers Examination must select other major or minor
subjects according to the requirements of German secondary schools.
